Each part of Istria is interesting to explore, but if you would like to discover the eastern part of it, the area around Labin and Rabac, we have a suggestion for you.. If you are a fan of nature and outdoor activities but like to explore the cultural heritage, we suggest trying out the Sentona Trail. It connects two different worlds: Rabac, a relaxed seaside village with crystal-clear waters and a charming promenade and Labin, a medieval town with cobbled streets, art galleries, and a rich mining history.

About the Sentona’s Trail

Did you know the trail is named after Sentona, the ancient protector of travellers and the goddess of safety worshipped in the Labin area during Roman times? The trail is 2.5 kilometers long, quite easy, and well-marked, which makes it suitable for families and recreational hikers. Depending on your pace, you will need from 1 to 1.5 hours to climb or descend it. Some of its parts are rather steep, so comfortable sports shoes are recommended.

How to Get to Sentona’s Trail

As we mentioned before, the Sentona’s Trail connects Laban with Rabac. You can decide whether you want to ascend towards Labin from Rabac where the starting point is in the Maslinica Cove, or start the descent from Labin, near the Labin-Rabac Tourist Board. If you are staying at one of Valamar’s hotels in Rabac, the easiest and quickest way to reach the starting point of the trail is to take the tourist train that connects the entire promenade

What to See on the Trail

Besides enjoying the most beautiful protected natural landscapes in the Labin area, with streams and rapids, and the waterfall Pećina, you can also enjoy some of the most amazing views that stretch all over Kvarner. The beautiful green Mediterranean vegetation and the sounds of the waterfalls will make you think you are in some kind of a fairy tale, especially in spring and autumn, when there is likely more water in the streams and waterfalls. Guess what, you can even have a picnic on the stone table with benches and forget about the rest of the civilisation. Don’t forget to switch off your mobile phones for a complete digital detox.

While exploring the hidden beauty at every turn, you will also discover seven charming bridges crossing the water and the mysterious Negri’s cave with a spring emerging from the rock. There’s a legend that says the giant of Labin once lived there, and that the skeleton of a giant three times bigger than a man was once discovered in the cave – but it mysteriously disappeared and was never found again. So the Giant of Labin remains just a legend.

Near the biggest waterfall, several metres high, called Pećina, lie the remnants of an old watermill which can also be reached. It’s especially magical after rainfall when the streams and the natural pool are full.
