History and Culture

Rab Island is steeped in rich history and cultural heritage, with roots dating back to ancient times. It was known as Arba during Roman times and became a significant settlement due to its strategic location along the Adriatic Sea. Among the most notable historical figures associated with Rab is Saint Marinus, a stonemason who is believed to have originated from the island before moving to Italy in the 3rd century. There, he founded a Christian community that eventually evolved into the independent Republic of San Marino, one of the world’s oldest republics.

Another key figure in Rab’s history is Saint Christopher, the island’s patron saint. According to local legend, Saint Christopher miraculously saved Rab from invaders on two occasions. In gratitude, the people of Rab made him their protector, and his feast day is July 27th, the last day of Rabska Fjera. On that day, the knights’ games of the Association of Rab Crossbowmen are held to mark the closing of Rabska Fjera.

Rabska Fjera Festival – a Must-Visit Event

Rabska Fjera, or the Rab Medieval Festival, is a vibrant and historical event held annually on the island of Rab, typically from July 25th to 27th. This festival, rooted in tradition and local pride, celebrates the rich mediaeval heritage of Rab, bringing the town’s history to life through a series of captivating events. It was first organised in 1364 to honour King Louis the Great of Hungary and Queen Elizabeth, who granted Rab the status of a free town.

The celebration includes an array of mediaeval-themed activities, such as traditional crafts, archery competitions, knightly tournaments, and processions through the ancient streets of Rab Town. Local craftsmen, artisans, and performers dress in period-accurate attire, showcasing traditional skills like blacksmithing, weaving, and pottery-making.

Flavours of Rab Island

For those seeking happiness through the flavours of Rab Island, there are a few must-try culinary delights that capture the essence of this Adriatic paradise. One of the island’s most famous treats is Rabska Torta or Rab Cake.

This traditional dessert has been made for centuries, featuring a spiral shape and a delicate filling made of almonds, maraschino liqueur, lemon zest, and aromatic spices, all wrapped in a thin layer of dough. Originally created by nuns for a visit by Pope Alexander III in the 12th century, it has since become a symbol of Rab’s rich gastronomic tradition.

Seafood lovers will delight in the fresh catch of the day, with dishes like gregada (a classic fish stew), grilled scampi, or brudet, a savory fish stew with tomatoes, garlic, and local herbs. These dishes are often accompanied by locally grown olive oil and herbs, which add a distinctive Mediterranean flavour.

For a truly authentic experience, visit one of the island’s restaurants or konobas (traditional taverns) where you can enjoy these flavours in a rustic, welcoming setting, often with stunning sea views.
