Kicking off the season with a bang

Obertauern kicks off its winter in spectacular fashion with the annual Ski Opening. And this year it’s featuring two headline concerts: Seiler und Speer on 28 November and Edmund on 5 December. This event marks the official start of the ski season with live concerts, DJ sets, and après-ski parties that go late into the night.

It’s also your first chance to carve fresh tracks on perfectly prepared slopes, thanks to Obertauern’s high altitude and excellent snowmaking. If you want to experience great early-season deals and a buzzing party atmosphere, Ski Opening is the perfect time to visit.

Expect a day of skiing, inspiration, and community – from carving turns with professional coaches to sharing a mountain hut lunch and raising funds for a great cause. It’s one of the most empowering and uplifting events of the season.

Who will find the winning chest?

From 16 to 19 April 2026, Obertauern becomes the stage for Austria’s biggest snow treasure hunt. Armed with little shovels, more than a thousand “gold diggers” race across a football-pitch-sized area to unearth one of over 30 hidden treasure chests, each with prizes worth at least €500. And the main prize? A brand-new BMW.

It’s part adrenaline rush, part giant snow party, complete with live music, cheering crowds, and an après-ski celebration that goes late into the night. Whether you’re digging for gold or just there for the spectacle, this quirky event is a highlight of the spring season.
