Nestled along the picturesque coastline of Santa Marina in Tar-Vabriga, a unique initiative has taken root: the opening of a million-euro Fisherman’s Interpretation Centre “Al Penon”. This ambitious project aims to valorize and preserve the rich history and vibrant traditions of the local fishing community, offering both a tribute to the past and a vision for the future.

About the Fisherman’s House “Al Penon”

Fisherman’s House “Al Penon is a place where visitors will get to know better the life of local fishermen, ways of catching the fish, shellfish and mussels but also find out about their habits and how they used to spend their free time.  The realisation of the Fisherman’s House was made possible through the collaboration and support of local government, local businesses and local residents.

Celebrating Fisherman’s Legacy

The Fisherman’s House stands as a testament to the generations of fishermen who have long been the lifeblood of Santa Marina in Tar-Vabriga. For centuries, this community has relied on the bountiful seas, forging a deep connection with the Adriatic sea that is etched into the cultural fabric of the town. 

The new centre not only celebrates this legacy but also serves as a hub for education and cultural exchange, ensuring that the knowledge and skills of past generations are passed down to future ones.

Traditional and Modern Design 

Designed with a blend of traditional and modern architectural elements, the Fisherman’s House reflects the dual commitment to honour the past while embracing contemporary innovations. The building itself is a masterpiece, seamlessly integrating sustainable materials and practices. Reclaimed wood and local stone are utilised to create a space that is as environmentally conscious as it is aesthetically pleasing.

A Cultural and Educational Hub

The Fisherman’s House offers a variety of exhibits and interactive experiences that delve into the history of fishing in Santa Marina. Visitors can explore displays of traditional fishing gear, photographs, and personal stories that paint a vivid picture of the community’s past. In addition, numerous workshops and education that will focus on valorisation of the fishermen’s tradition of this area are planned in the future and will be dedicated to all the generations of local residents and curious travellers.

The story about the Fisherman’s House is told to the visitors by its host, educator and storyteller, Ms. Izabela Raunik Keglević whose grandfather was also one of the fishermen whose knowledge and testimonial were used for this exhibit which shows the importance of the community involvement to the project

Boosting Local Economy and Tourism

Beyond its cultural and educational contributions, the Fisherman’s House is poised to become a significant driver of local tourism. By attracting visitors interested in the unique heritage and traditions of Santa Marina, the project is expected to boost the local economy. Moreover, the opening of a restaurant where visitors of the centre and not only, will be able to taste the traditional recipes made with fish will be a significant addition to the tourist offer of the centre.
