Outdoor Activities in Spring on Hvar Island
Try the Attractive Hvar Ferrata near Sveta Nedjelja
One of the most thrilling outdoor activities on the Island of Hvar is climbing the Hvar Ferrata located in the hills above Sveta Nedjelja. The ascent to the Ferrata is provided by narrow stairs carved into the rock while the metal bridge swings above the settlement. You will be rewarded with a magnificent view of the sea, vineyards and olive groves. It’s ideal in May when the weather is mild and the crowds are smaller.

Go Mountain Biking Across the Island
Hvar has a network of trails perfect for biking. A popular route is from Stari Grad to Hvar Town, passing through beautiful lavender fields, olive groves and ancient stone walls. This is an ideal activity to combine sightseeing with the outdoor activity – and a lot of fun even for more families!

Mountain biking around the island of Hvar
If you want a guided experience, try the Kabal bike trail. It is a circular trail and it stretches the entire length of the Kabal Peninsula. The beginning of the trail is in the centre of Stari Grad from where it goes north to Rudina, towards the Kabal Peninsula. Upon returning to Stari Grad, it goes through the southern part of the peninsula, along a promenade by the sea.
Take an Off-Road Adventure (Jeep or Quad Tour)
If you want to experience something different, sign up for a Jeep or quad safari. These excursions explore rugged coastal tracks, hidden coves, and hilltop viewpoints such as the Fortica Fortress above Hvar Town, giving you a different perspective of the island’s dramatic landscapes with an adrenaline rush.
Hike to Hidden Villages Malo Grablje and Velo Grablje
Besides the seaside towns, Hvar is dotted with centuries-old stone villages like Malo Grablje and Velo Grablje near Brusje. Velo Grablje was founded in the 14th century with stone houses and courtyards that will get your attention with interesting architecture and the vibe of the past. In the past, it was famous for its good wine and olive oil, with lavender oil being one of the leading products in Europe at the time. After Velo Grablje you will reach Malo Grablje, which resembles the nest as it is located in the stone rock above the bay of Milna.
A guided hike can take you through wild, unspoiled areas and tell the stories behind these once-thriving communities.

Wine Tasting and Gourmet Experiences
Wine Tasting at Local Wineries in Jelsa or Svirče
Hvar is renowned for its robust reds (Plavac Mali) and delightful whites (Bogdanuša). Head to Jelsa or Svirče to sample wines at family-run cellars such as Tomić or Duboković. May is certainly a great time to learn about Hvar’s winemaking heritage before the summer rush.

Sightseeing and Exploring Historical Heritage
Explore the Stari Grad Plain (Starogradsko polje)
Starogradsko polje is the best-preserved ancient Greek landscape in the Mediterranean, planted with the same grape and olive crops as 2400 years ago. It has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 20028 with the old town of Stari Grad. You’ll see the original stone walls, pathways, and fields created by the old Greeks. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the island’s agricultural past and certainly worth a visit in spring.
Visit Grapčeva Cave (Grapčeva Špilja)
For a bit of adventure and history combined, make the short hike from Humac village to Grapčeva Cave, the most prehistoric site on the Adriatic, located on the southern part of the island. You’ll be amazed by the stalactite formations and archeological remnants dating back to Neolithic times. Guided tours are occasionally arranged, providing insights into the island’s earliest settlers and their way of life.
Visit Fortica Fortress (Španjola) in Hvar Town
The Fortica Fortress, or Španjola in Hvar, was built in the 16th century, and today it keeps collections from antiquity and the Middle Ages. It has fascinating architecture, but you will also be delighted with its unique panoramic view of the Hvar Town and the Pakleni islands. The walk from the Pjaca and the climb to the fortress is a special experience but as you can see on the picture, you can reach the top of it by bike.
