Although I have beautiful memories of organising the Casanova Tour, an event celebrating the life and legacy of the world’s most famous lover, which allowed me to discover every hidden corner of this charming town and its mysterious past, Vrsar continues to amaze me every time I visit. With its warm-hearted hosts and timeless appeal, it’s easy to fall in love with this coastal gem all over again.

Casanova Lives On in the Streets and Viewpoints of Vrsar

Anyone who’s visited Vrsar, even once, has likely encountered the story of Giacomo Casanova, the renowned Venetian adventurer and lover. Casanova visited Vrsar twice, in 1743 and 1744, by chance, as he recounts in his Memoirs. His presence can still be felt throughout the old town, where winding lanes and scenic viewpoints carry whispers of his romantic escapades.

Whether it’s sitting on the bench by the Small Town Gate, across from the Church of St Anthony of Padua where visitors can take photos with the sculpture of Casanova, or standing at the famous Casanova viewpoint, one of the most beautiful panoramic spots overlooking the Vrsar bay, home to one of the region’s most striking romantic sculpture, or perhaps visiting Casanova’s Sanctuary”, a multimedia centre dedicated to the years Casanova spent in Vrsar. All of these are part of Casanova’s Vrsar, a place that has always inspired us, but one we’ll explore in more detail in another article.

Brunch in Vrsar with a View That Takes Your Breath Away

This time, our visit to Vrsar was to discover the perfect flavours of, can you guess what? Brunch, of course! Yes, you read that right, brunch, the beloved late-morning meal that blends breakfast and lunch, and which has become a staple in many destinations around the world. I’ve enjoyed some of the best brunches during my travels abroad, where the brunch culture has flourished in recent years, helped along, no doubt, by its creative presentation on social media.

So, my colleague and I decided to visit a few of the most highly recommended brunch spots in Vrsar, soak up the quiet spring morning atmosphere in this still-sleepy seaside town, bask in the gentle sunshine, and enjoy the understated hospitality of our hosts. We’ll let you decide for yourself how it all turned out!

Brunch at the Vrsar Marina

The panoramic views in Vrsar are among the most beautiful you’ll find along the western coast of Istria, whether you’re admiring them from the viewpoints in the old town or from the waterfront in Vrsar’s marina. We began our tour of Vrsar with a delicious brunch overlooking the marina, and we were genuinely impressed. The brunch was flavourful and thoughtfully prepared using local ingredients, while our hosts were warm and welcoming, doing everything they could to make our relaxed Istrian brunch experience truly enjoyable.

At Lounge Bar Velum, you can choose from several brunch options, including sunny-side-up eggs with crispy bacon, a delicious omelette with Istrian truffles, and the ever-popular eggs Benedict, all served with fresh seasonal salads, freshly squeezed juices and excellent coffee. And for those who prefer salmon and avocado, you won’t be disappointed either.

We’re almost certain we’ll return to Velum to once again enjoy the turquoise sea and the lively atmosphere of the marina.

You can also taste typical Vrsar amaretti at this lounge bar, made here following a traditional recipe. We recommend it!

Brunch With a Panoramic Sea View

As we mentioned earlier, Vrsar is known for its viewpoints and stunning panoramic vistas, and one of the most photographed is the view from Caffe Bar Ladonja. The bar is named after the traditional Istrian ladonja (black mulberry tree), recognisable by its wide canopy and dense shade.

We enjoyed the shade of the ladonja tree while savouring another beautifully presented brunch with an impressive view of the sea, Sveti Juraj Island, and the marina. Shade, relaxation, the charm of our hosts, and a Mediterranean atmosphere, can it get any more perfect than this? As for the brunch itself, a perfect blend of Mediterranean flavours with a French touch – let the photos speak for themselves.

Brunch in the Heart of the Old Town

Another charming spot that leaves no one indifferent is Aperitif & Snack Bar Rosinjola, set right in the heart of the old town on Degrassi Square, with views of historic buildings. On the bar’s terrace, you’ll often find cyclists who’ve made their way up to the square, rewarding themselves with a fine coffee, freshly squeezed juice, and a brunch that fuels their continued exploration of this beautiful region. Rosinjola takes its name from the locally produced olive oil, crafted by the owners themselves and used in nearly every dish. As my colleague and I were leaving Rosinjola, we thought how lovely it would be to return in the evening for an aperitif and soak in the old town’s relaxed, twilight charm.

Where to Stay in Vrsar

If our tour,  and especially the flavours of the brunches you could almost taste through the photos, has inspired you to spend more than just a morning in Vrsar and its surroundings, we’d recommend Camping Orsera. Just a few minutes’ walk from the town centre, Camping Orsera places you in the heart of a Mediterranean oasis. You can relax on the beaches or take advantage of the many land and sea activities available at the nearby sports centre.
