Donji Kamenjak – Biodiversity Trail

The first hiking trail we recommend in this article is located at the southern tip of Istria. Cape Kamenjak is a nature park famous for its coastline and crystal-clear sea that attracts many daily visitors from all over Istria. While swimming and relaxing on the beach is popular during summer, hiking can be interesting in spring and autumn.  You can enjoy beautiful nature while being active and also, learn something about the protected species that grow in this park. Did you know that more than 600 species make this area an exceptional source of biodiversity? Most valuable are the grasslands and particularly 30 species of orchids that grow in the area of Kamenjak, locally called Punta.

This easy trail begins at the parking at Premantura’s entrance and takes you through the protected landscapes of Kamenjak towards the footprints of the dinosaur where you can see the impressive life-sized sculptures. From there you hike on the western coast while you reach the coves and the impressive cliffs of Mala and Velika Kolumbarica, before heading towards Cape Franina and going back to the village of Premantura along the eastern side. It’s an easy walk, you can combine it with a swim if the weather is nice  or a picnic.

Stjepan Hauser Trail

This trail has been named after the world-renowned cellist Stjepan Hauser, who was born in  Pula, but with his family from Rakalj, a small village on the eastern coast of Istria. So this trail is both a tribute to art and nature. In Rakalj you’ll easily find parking, and from the village centre a gentle descent brings you to the sign marking the start of the Stjepan Hauser Trail which is 3.3 km long in one way. It offers views of some of the most beautiful bays in Istria, that is from Kalavojna Bay through Luka Bay, towards the Saint Mikula Cape. At Saint Mikula Cape you will enjoy the view of a photogenic red lighthouse, perfect spot for an Instagram photograph!
