Is It Worth Going on a Game of Thrones Tour in Dubrovnik?
I’m not a fan of the series, but I was surprised to learn how many tourists visit Dubrovnik each year for the Game of Thrones tour. Some want to see where the actors stayed, others explore filming locations from iconic scenes, and many simply wish to experience Dubrovnik through the eyes of their favourite characters.
Dubrovnik – A Popular Filming Location
In addition to its natural beauty and rich history for which it is globally renowned, Dubrovnik has also become a sought-after filming location. Stradun has caught the attention of numerous international producers. Did you know that Leonardo DiCaprio chose Stradun to stand in for Nottingham in his version of Robin Hood?
What’s more, a scene from Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) was filmed right here in Dubrovnik. Stradun was transformed into a futuristic avenue complete with flying vehicles, while the streets behind Dubrovnik Cathedral were used for thrilling night-time escape sequences.

Stradun served as a backdrop for scenes in Star Wars.
Game of Thrones has cemented Dubrovnik’s important role in the film industry, with several seasons filmed across various locations in the city. For the purposes of filming, Dubrovnik was transformed into the real-life King’s Landing.
What Game of Thrones Means for Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik welcomes around 1.4 million visitors each year, but this mega-popular series has made the city an even more desirable destination. According to data from the Zagreb Institute of Economics, around 60,000 tourists visit annually specifically to explore the filming locations of iconic scenes from the series. The Dubrovnik Tourist Board also confirms that themed activities, such as Game of Thrones tours and experiences related to the series, are extremely popular and are believed to attract a significant number of visitors every year.
A Film Tour Perfect for Game of Thrones Fans
I chose a film-themed tour led by Ivan Vuković, a well-known local guide in Dubrovnik. This tour is ideal for fans of the series, offering a glimpse into how the film industry has influenced tourism in Croatia and giving visitors a chance to step into the world of their favourite show or film. I joined Ivan as he welcomed his group at the entrance to the Old Town. The sun was high in the sky, and the atmosphere was full of excitement—everyone was eagerly waiting for the tour to begin!

Game of Thrones Filming Locations
Thanks to the spectacular scenes filmed within the city walls, Dubrovnik’s Old Town has become a must-visit destination for fans across the globe. Walking down Stradun, gazing out from Fort Lovrijenac, or descending the iconic Jesuit steps—all take on a whole new meaning.

Jesuit Staircase

A view of the Jesuit Staircase, the filming location of the iconic “Walk of Shame” scene
One of the most iconic scenes in Game of Thrones—Cersei’s “Walk of Shame” – was filmed right here on the Jesuit Staircase in Dubrovnik. Standing at the top of the steps and looking down towards Stradun, it’s easy to imagine the tolling bell and the scene that shocked millions of viewers. Stripped of all titles and dignity, Cersei Lannister descends between the stone walls as the city watches in silence and judgment. For many fans on the Game of Thrones tour in Dubrovnik, this location is the emotional high point of the experience.
Fort Lovrijenac – The Real Red Keep

The guide draws a parallel between the actual Fort Lovrijenac and its on-screen role in Game of Thrones
Rising high above Dubrovnik’s cliffs, Fort Lovrijenac commands breathtaking views of the Adriatic – just as the Red Keep towered over King’s Landing. This striking fortress served as the backdrop for some of Game of Thrones’ most iconic scenes: the tournament held in King Joffrey’s honour, Tyrion’s sharp strategies on the ramparts, and Cersei’s cold gaze from above.
You don’t even need to step inside – one look at Lovrijenac instantly transports you to Westeros. For true fans, this is the real Red Keep – perched above the sea and within reach.
Lokrum Island – Qarth
Just ten minutes by boat from Dubrovnik’s Old Port, Lokrum transforms in the series into the mysterious city of Qarth – “the greatest city that ever was or will be.” This is where Daenerys arrives after crossing the Red Waste, searching for allies and a way to reclaim her dragons.
Scenes were filmed in front of the Benedictine monastery and among the island’s centuries-old gardens, where the contrast between real history and fantasy feels almost surreal. Walking these paths means stepping into one of the most pivotal chapters of her story. Lokrum isn’t just a haven of nature and tranquillity – for Game of Thrones fans, it becomes a real-life gateway to Qarth.

Where the real meets the mythical in the city of Qarth.
More Locations That Thrilled Fans of the Series
If you thought that was all, just wait until you discover what else Dubrovnik has to offer. These spots might not be instantly recognisable, but in the series, they were transformed into the settings of some of the most pivotal scenes:
- West Harbour – Blackwater Bay
This picturesque cove became the backdrop for one of the series’ most intense battles. Standing at the water’s edge, where ships once burned and wildfire lit up King’s Landing, is a moment fans won’t forget. - Minčeta Tower – House of the Undying
The highest point on Dubrovnik’s city walls played a key role as the mysterious tower where Daenerys searched for her dragons. Facing this monumental tower, it’s easy to feel the same fury and determination. - Fort Bokar – defence of King’s Landing
Overlooking the open sea, this part of Dubrovnik’s walls served as the stronghold in the capital’s defence. You can almost picture the approaching armies and the tense anticipation of battle. - Gradac Park – the Purple Wedding
Behind this peaceful green haven lies one of the most shocking scenes in the series. It’s here that Joffrey and Margaery said their vows – and where everything changed. - Rector’s Palace – the interior of Qarth
Baroque inside, fairy-tale outside, this palace became the stage for political negotiations and fragile alliances. Daenerys sought support here – and now you can walk through those same chambers.
The Excitement of a Group of Game of Thrones Fans on Tour

Valamar Destination Insider with Ivan Vuković, expert tour guide, during a Game of Thrones tour in Dubrovnik
Fans of Game of Thrones are particularly impressed by the safety and cleanliness of Dubrovnik, as well as by the many filming locations that offer stunning panoramic views. What sets this tour apart from other cultural and historical tours is the chance to experience Dubrovnik from a completely different perspective – something they truly appreciate.
They’re also curious about where the actors stayed and whether the city was crowded during filming. Many are thrilled to learn that Split and its surroundings were also part of the Game of Thrones story, and they often express a strong desire to return to Croatia.
So, to answer the question in the title, yes.
In addition to this tour, we also recommend another exciting excursion: a Game of Thrones boat tour aboard the Karaka, the same type of vessel Daenerys sailed. Step into the world of Westeros and enjoy an unforgettable adventure in Dubrovnik!
