Golden Holiday in the South: Valent Sinković Reveals Why He Always Returns to Valamar with His Family
Valent Sinković (36), a Croatian sports giant, has written the history of world rowing alongside his one-year-younger brother Martin, on the wings of three Olympic gold medals and one silver medal. In addition to numerous medals, achieved records, and outstanding sports results, our celebrated rower can recently boast another success – the status of a loyal guest of Valamar’s hotels in the Dubrovnik area, where he has been vacationing with his wife and sons for years.
This time, we caught up with him at the height of the season, relaxing in the shade of pine trees during a family holiday at the Valamar Tirena Hotel in Dubrovnik. But no conversation with Valent can happen without reflecting on his inspiring sports story…

Three Olympic gold medals and one silver medal – the numbers are impressive. When you reflect on your career so far, is there a moment that is particularly dear to your heart?
It was the last gold, not just because of the medal itself but also because of the drama of the race and the emotion surrounding it. People still tell us where they were when they watched that race – it left a mark. It’s nice to know that we awakened such feelings in someone.
No, sport is never just a series of victories. Were there moments when you thought about giving up?
Of course. Sport is full of ups and downs, and injuries are the toughest part – I’ve had five rib fractures. Months without training can be incredibly frustrating, but I never considered quitting. I love the sport too much. It teaches you patience and the belief that better days will come.
Before rowing, you tried your hand at several sports. What made rowing become your life?
We followed our older brother – first him, Martin, then me. He eventually gave it up, but Martin and I stuck with it. Rowing just captured us. Later, we were inspired by the Skelin brothers, but the biggest help came from Slovenian rowers Čop and Špik; their training and advice shaped us.
You’re still rowing, but now in a four. How did that change come about?
This is the first time since 2013 that we’re rowing with others – the Lončarić brothers. They’re 25, full of energy, and we bring the experience. It’s a great mix. And it’s working as we took silver immediately at the European Championships.
Does that mean we might see you in Los Angeles in 2028?
That’s the plan. Right now I’m completely focused on the upcoming Games. I still want to win for myself, and for my sons who follow it all. But realistically, it is difficult to expect that I will be able to continue at this pace after 40.
How do your sons view your success?
They know Dad’s at a competition, they watch the races and get excited about the medals, but of course, they don’t yet grasp the full meaning. Still, I want to show them that dedication and perseverance pay off. They don’t need to be athletes, but I’d love for them to appreciate sport for the values it brings.
Balancing family life with sport can’t be easy. How do you manage it?
I couldn’t do it without my wife – she keeps everything together when I’m away. Before we had kids, sport was everything. Now, they come first. When I’m home, I do my best to be fully present. And honestly, they give me extra strength and motivation.
And when you’re not training – how do you recharge?
I love tennis, football, chess, and cards. But on holiday, it’s all about the kids – swimming, beach, playtime. There’s never a dull moment with them!
No surprise then that this is your fourth time at Valamar. What keeps bringing you back to Dubrovnik?
It just feels like home. Everything suits us: the hotel, the amenities, the location. Kids love Maro World, the play areas, the pools – all of it. If they’re happy, we’re happy.

And how are you spending your days here at Tirena Hotel?
We head to the beach straight after breakfast, while the kids go to the pool. Afternoons are for more swimming, then Maro World – they can spend hours there. Dinners always with a sunset view, and I enjoy the live music on the terrace in the evening. That’s the highlight of the day.

Maro World sounds like a paradise for children. Are your sons there every day?
Absolutely! There are outdoor trampolines, interactive games, a playroom – everything. Even a gaming room, though they’re still a bit young for that. The key thing is they’re happy and entertained – which means parents can finally relax a bit too.

Maro World’s trampoline park blends active fun with breathtaking views – a paradise for kids to match.
What’s most important to you when travelling as a family?
The facilities. We always check what’s on offer for kids. Comfortable accommodation and good food matter too, of course, but if there’s no fun for the little ones, it’s tough. Here, there’s everything and more!
Do you have any special family rituals on holiday?
Evening walks, ice cream in the old town, playing cards… Little things that make a holiday feel special. And we always visit Dubrovnik’s Old Town – it’s just 10–15 minutes by bus from the hotel. Perfect!
